Want a free red pen? Just mail me your business card, along with your current
marketing piece (ad, brochure, mailer, whatever youre using) and a note saying
free red pen. This offer is valid only for businesses in the U.S. In response,
Ill mail you back a free red pen, and a one-page executive analysis of your
marketing communication!
Why mail only? First, because most marketing pieces dont fit into an email. Second,
because several years ago, this offer made several freebie websites and
emailing lists. Everyone loves freebies, so youll understand how, in a matter of
hours, I was inundated with several hundred requests for free red pens, some from places
like Afghanistan. My response (after clicking back to the referring websites and selecting
some cool freebies for myself) was immediate. After all, wheres the marketing sense
in targeting non-prospects? Moreover, should anyone take marketing advice from someone who
let that continue? So, my challenge, at 2 a.m. on a Sunday morning, was to develop a better
offer - one that both added value and helped identify potential business partnerships.
Now, I have a fair chance that if you respond to this offer, you might actually need
copywriting services. And you receive information of far greater value than a red
pen (however spiffy).
